In my new portfolio career, I work from home and travel widely. It began a few months ago and has been at once both an exciting and a confronting challenge. Confronting, because moving from a secure job to a portfolio role requires you to operate like a fisherman seeking out that next piece of work. And the transition from security brings with it reflections on belonging and closer links with friends and the community. Change also brings with it the quest for controlling self-doubt and strengthening self-belief. The simplicity of this task masks the energy and assertiveness required internally and externally to complete it. Like some installation artists, I have begun to experiment on me. When Bridges talked about transition as a time of fertile emptiness the opportunity to learn from it is irresistible. I have been re-examining some of those career tools, concepts and exercises. No surprise that many work as well as expected. Also as expected, it is the mentors and networks that have been central and critically important. The nature of my colleagues has meant that I have also had access to ongoing formal and informal career coaching. What I value about access to professional input into my further career development is the support to move from the conceptual to action. It takes time.
